The homemade Stratton Bed project is complete and installed! The end user is more than satisfied with the beds performance and is successfully sleeping in the bed.
Building the bed in three pieces was a must making this easy to carry up the stairs and move into place. Once aligned, I screwed all of the boxes together and we were ready to install the mattress.
I was surprised to find out that the mattress we purchased was slightly smaller that the “official” twin mattress dimensions in both width and length. In the future I would either build the set-up slightly smaller (1”-2”in length) in each direction or I would move the screws for the tops in towards the center of the boxes another inch so they would be covered by the mattress.
All told the project came together quickly, and I was able to learn a few things about painting that I hadn’t know, so I rate it as a successful build. Baskets for the platform bed are forthcoming, and the drawers are a definite “no” at least until the little guy is tall enough to climb up onto the bed on his own.
Compared to the Pottery Barn version I think I came pretty close to the design and the cost was a lot more economical to build rather than to buy from the store at $999, which did not include shipping at another $125.
My cost re-cap brings me in slightly over $220 in materials, keeping in mind I had the proper tools and some expendables on hand I tried to be fair with the material costs. The project took me approximately 26 hours to complete. These were sometimes pretty inefficient hours, working around kids, work, chores, and the holidays, but again I think it’s a fair approximation of work hours for the project. Since my labor was free this was a great deal!
